Similar to all living things, plants will be able to get by without food for much longer than they can without water. In truth, 80%-95% of a plant is made up of water. Plants need care and attention and the manner of how and when you water them actually makes a significant effect on them. If you want to make sure that you best take care of your loved plants then keep on reading our 5 Essential Tips on Water Plants.

Tip #1: It Is Optimal to Hydrate Plants During the Morning

The time that is most efficient to water outdoor plants is before the heat of the day when the soil is still cool. During the morning, water has the best chance of seeping down to the roots of the plants. When you water your plants early, you will ensure that they have enough moisture beneath the soil to withstand the heat of a summer day.

Tip #2: Water Plants at Soil Level

When you direct water at the base of your plants, it will deliver the hydration right where it is needed—the roots. You can also consider winding a soaker hose between plants in a flower or vegetable bed to soak the soil slowly and deeply which in turn will ensure your plant’s healthy growth.

Tip #3: Water Outdoor Container Plants at Least Once per Day

Did you know that the soil in container gardens and flower pots dries out quickly compared to a soil in a garden plot and flower beds? Remember that the smaller the container, the more frequent you need to water. The key thing to do is to soak the soil in containers in the morning and if your thermometer reaches 90 and above, soak them a second time during the afternoon.

Tip #4: Do Not Rely On Rain to Water Your Plants

Nearly all garden plants, flowers, and shrubs will do well if they receive at least an inch of water per week; however, they may need more during hot, dry spells. Simply relying on the rain will not be enough. Rain is not always sufficient at supplying enough water for your plants to thrive. What you can do to make sure that your plants are getting enough water is by using a rain gauge. If your loved plants get less than 1 inch of rain, supplement it by water.

Tip #5: Check Moisture Levels

Aside from watering, you also need to remember the moisture level of your plants. The plants in your garden will also suffer when the soil dries out. During a hot, windy day, the soil’s surface may appear dry; however, the ground beneath it is still moist. So, it is essential to check that you do not overwater your loved plants. To do this, use a wooden dowel handy then insert it a few inches into the garden soil and then pull it out and check. If it comes out clean, the soil is dry and it is time to water!
